California - #052

Los Angeles, California

Is a sprawling Southern California city...

Los Angeles is a sprawling Southern California city, the center of the nation’s film and television industry. Near its iconic Hollywood sign, studios such as Paramount Pictures, Universal and Warner Brothers offer behind-the-scenes tours. On Hollywood Boulevard, TCL Chinese Theatre displays celebrities’ hand and footprints, the Walk of Fame honors thousands of luminaries and vendors sell maps to stars’ homes.

Coming over the mountains to Los Angeles was a thrill, with all the beauty of the landscape, I was able to take wonderful photos of the land as we got closer to the airport.

Venice Beach

Is a buzzing beach town...

Venice continues to be an important Los Angeles cultural center.

Known for its bohemian spirit, Venice is a buzzing beach town with upscale commercial and residential pockets. Free-spirited Venice Boardwalk is the site of funky shops, street performers and colorful murals. There’s also a skate park and Muscle Beach outdoor gym.

From its world famous boardwalk and beautiful beach to the shopper’s paradise of Abbot Kinney Blvd., if you're looking for cool things to do in California, Venice offers a unique and vibrant mix of activities and attractions.

On our Download, we take you through the street shops to experience many unusual sites.

Muscle Beach Venice...

The giant concrete barbell...

You can’t miss the outdoor weightlifting area at Muscle Beach Venice: just look for the giant concrete barbell atop the roof.

Hardbodies and spectators alike congregate at the workout mecca, located at the south end of the Venice Beach Recreation Center. Foremost among these is the original Gold’s Gym, where Arnold Schwarzenegger and other legendary bodybuilders pumped iron in the 1970s.

Our first time at muscle beach and it was an experience. Lots to see and it was bustling with people. There are lots of little stores, food and workout sites with bars. It seems like a great place to feel motivated to work out or show off your hard earned body.

Dubbed "the coolest block in America", Abbot Kinney is home to one-of- kind.

Beverly Hills...

Hollywood stars...

Beverly Hills is a city in California's Los Angeles County. Home to many Hollywood stars, it features the upscale shopping street of Rodeo Drive.

THE PUBLIC GOT A SNEAK PEEK OF THE WALK IN 1958.

Famous Hollywood sidewalk area emblazoned with stars & celebrity names since then.

Though today there are five categories of inductees, in the Walk of Fame’s earliest days there were just four: Motion Pictures, Television, Recording or Music, and Radio. It wasn’t until 1984 that a category for Theatre/Live Performance was added.

MOVIE STARS MAKE UP THE BULK OF THE WALK!

Of the 2,600-plus stars that currently make up the Walk of Fame, 47 percent of them are in the Motion Pictures category, followed by Television (24 percent), Music (17 percent), Radio (10 percent), and Live Performance (less than 2 percent).

MUHAMMAD ALI IS CONSIDERED A “LIVE PERFORMER.”

Stars on the Walk of Fame...

THERE’S ALSO THE MATTER OF A $40,000 FEE!

Stars on the Walk of Fame don’t grow on trees.

Nor do they come free.

Every nomination application must also list a sponsor for said nominee, who agrees to cover the $40,000 it costs to create, install, and maintain the star, which is made of terrazzo and brass.
