Plazza Novona

Rome's second-favorite square after Saint Peter's

Piazza Navona is a square in Rome, Italy.  It was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, built in the 1st century AD, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium.

Piazza Navona is considered by many to be Rome's second-favorite square after Saint Peter's.  MANY PHOTOS & VIDEOS TAKEN & INCLUDED ON THE MOVIE/DOWNLOAD - WHAT A PLACE TO VISIT!

With its ornate fountains, mansions and colorful cast of street artist, hawkers and horse-drawn carriages, Piazza Navona is central Rome's elegant showcase square "day or night"!

Three lavish fountains were built here; Fountain of Neptune and the Fountain of the Four Rivers at one end and the Fountain of the Moor at the other end of the Piazza.

The Sant'Angese in Agone Church, the ancient Egyptian obelisk standing about 70 foot tall and the Nile and Plata statues in the Fountain of the Rivers all occupy one end of the Piazza.

FONTANA DEL MORO IN PIAZZA NAVONA

Piazza Navona is a complex and harmonic composition of several architectural, urban and sculptural masterpieces. Counterbalancing the beauty of the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the centre of the square, stand two basins at both theends.

On the south side, the Fountana del Moro fed by the Acqua Virgo aqueduct, is the most eye-catching of the two, and once again Gian Lorenzo Bernini is involved in its realisation.

The project of the fountain was first assigned to another famous Renaissance artist, Giacomo della Porta, in 1575 by Pope Gregory XIII.

Spanish Steps

Roman Baroque Style

Spanish Steps are a set of steps in Rome, Italy, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. The steps are a wide irregular gathering place consisted of 138 steps placed in a mix of curves, straight flights, vistas and terraces.

Spanish Steps with its irregular butterfly design, the beautiful “Scalina Spagna”, or Spanish Steps are just one of these must see places when in Rome and a great example of Roman Baroque Style.

The Trinità dei Monti is the 16th century French church (with later Italian Renaissance architecture) located at the top of the Spanish Steps. From here you have fine views over the city of Rome.

The Gothic church with a Renaissance facade has two bell-towers. Inside, several paintings decorate the different chapels. Among them are two works by Daniele da Volterra, a pupil of Michelangelo.

It was a great place to just sit down and enjoy the atmosphere and views of the Eternal City but not anymore!  The Spanish Steps are popular with tourists and locals during the spring and summer, where they can get very crowded - so there is a fine for sitting!

They connect the lower Piazza di Spagna with the upper piazza Trinita dei Monti, with its beautiful twin tower church dominating the skyline.

Fountain of the Old Boat

Found at the foot of the Spanish Steps

Fontana della Barcaccia

In the piazza at the bottom of the Spanish Steps is the 17th century Fountain of the Old Boat (Fontana della Barcaccia), spouting water as she sinks.

The story behind the ship is that the River Tiber often flooded before the city walls were built and in 1598 there was a particularly bad flooding and the Piazza di Spagna was flooded up to a meter. Once the water withdrew, a boat was left behind in the square.

The Fontana della Barcaccia is a Baroque-style fountain found at the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome's Piazza di Spagna. Pope Urban VIII commissioned Pietro Bernini in 1623 to build the fountain as part of a prior Papal project to erect a fountain in every major piazza in Rome.

The roof of the Pantheon was the largest dome Rome ever constructed and after nearly 2000 years, is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.

Civitavecchia, Rome's cruise port

Northwest of Rome...

Civitavecchia is a medium-size town about 80km north west of Rome. Civitavecchia is a major ferry port as well as cruise ship port.

Rome's major airport, Fiumicino, is to the west of Rome close to the coast, both airport and Rome itself are about an hour's drive.

There is a frequent train service between Civitavecchia and Rome's Termini Station, the most economical way of transferring between Civitavecchia and Rome and its airports.

The town itself is pleasant enough with a well kept sea front promenade with open air cafés and a small regional shopping centre. The kind of place you could kill time for two or three hours pleasantly if the weather is fair.

Amalfi is a town in a dramatic natural setting below steep cliffs on Italy’s southwest coast. The Museo Arsenale Amalfi is a medieval shipyard-turned-exhibition space.

Between the 9th and 11th centuries, it was the seat of a powerful maritime republic. The Arab-Norman Sant'Andrea cathedral at the heart of town, with its striped Byzantine facade, survives from this era. Look below...

Ruins of Pompei

In the year 79 AD, Italy's Mt. Vesuvius erupted with superheated ash that rained fiery death on several Roman cities nearby. But none was hit harder than vacation town Pompeii, which was buried in a thick layer of broiling ash in a matter of seconds. That ash killed over 1,000 people instantly and buried the town, which was eventually forgotten. But 1,800 years later, explorers and archaeologists discovered Pompeii again.
