Japan, Shimizu #035

Port of Shimizu...

Sail into the Port of Shimizu and you will understand why it is considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful ports. The sight of Mount Fuji soaring above the surrounding area belies the fact that Shimizu is not only a scenic area, but a culturally significant one as well. In addition to Fuji, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, the area also overlooks Miho-no-Matsubara.

With the area’s moderate climate to mark the port as one of Japan’s prime sightseeing destinations.  All the wonderful pictures of this beautiful port is on a download you can order for your own!  Here's a few photos...

Mount Fuji...

Is an active volcano...

Japan’s Mt. Fuji is an active volcano about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Commonly called “Fuji-san,” it’s the country’s tallest peak, at 3,776 meters. A pilgrimage site for centuries, it’s considered one of Japan’s 3 sacred mountains, and summit hikes remain a popular activity. Its iconic profile is the subject of numerous works of art, notably Edo Period prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige.  Elevation: 12,388′

Walk the Trails at Owakudani Valley...

This volcanic valley near Mount Hakone is well-known by locals for the healing properties of the sulfuric water, including the nearby hot springs. Hikers looking for a challenge will enjoy a four-hour trek on Mount Kamiyama.

Owakudani Valley ...

The Hakone ropeway's gondolas...

The Hakone ropeway's gondolas depart every minute and fit around ten people each. Traveling the full length of the ropeway takes around 30 minutes.

Along the journey, passengers can enjoy views of the active, sulfuric hot spring sources of the Owakudani Valley between Sounzan and Owakudani that literally means ‘great boiling valley’, it's a bubbling thermal springs and provides a multi-sensory experience of heat, smell, sound and taste.

White steam hisses out of cracks in the earth, and a strong smell of sulphur pervades the bleak valley. Steaming pools, hot streams and bubbling mud pits dot the rocky landscape, hinting at the immense power that lies deep underground.

Discover Owakudani Black Eggs in Hakone, Japan: Legend holds eating just one of these black eggs can add seven years to one's life.  This was an ordinary egg before it was hard-boiled in sulphurous spring water. Thankfully it’s only the outside that’s turned black.  It tastes like a regular hard-boiled egg!

They also offered green frozen custard made from green tea - that was also good!

Lake Ashi (Ashinoko)...

This lake is cruised by the Viking-style boats!

Nature's magic dazzles on this national park tour featuring this beautiful lake that you can Mt. Fuji in the distance.  We hopped aboard the Viking-style boat for an amazing 30-minute cruise and taking great photos of all the beauty that surrounded us.  What a wonderful experience!

Created 3,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption, this lake is cruised by boats year round and, from its southern edge, offers the view of Mt. Fuji often seen in tourist brochures.  Sightseeing destination for lake cruises on pirate-style ships with scenic mountain views.  Lots of great pictures on our download!

As we traveled on our luxury bus drive across the area, we stopped at a rest area and they had a food stand and all kinds of machines available for snacks and drinks and when we arrived in town, there was a McDonalds and a purple train ride.

Kinkaku-ji Temple...

Known as the ‘Golden Pavilion’!

The next day our cruise ship arrived in Kobe, Japan for our 9-hour tour!  We were in for an authentic taste of life in Kyoto and to experience the Japanese culture, food and performing arts!

Kinkaku-ji Temple, known as the ‘Golden Pavilion’ is one of the symbols of Kyoto and its most famous attraction. It was originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for the Shogun and later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple.

The magnificent temple’s top two floors are completely covered in brilliant gold leaf making it very picturesque against a lush green background.  It was beautiful and the surrounding area was so magnificent with something special on an island surrounded by water.  Lots if pictures for you on the download!

Kyoto...

Is a city on the island of Honshu...

Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is a city on the island of Honshu. It's famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses.

To conclude our tour we indulged in an authentic Japanese tradition called Shabu Shabu along with an exclusive Maiko Performance at a beautiful place called LOURAN.

It’s also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining, consisting of multiple courses of precise dishes, and geisha, female entertainers often found in the Gion district.

A Maiko is a Geisha in training, usually about the age of 15 to 20 years old.  Here's a photo of our lovely lady and on our video, she's performing along with her accompaniment on our 30-minute download.

A unique tour visiting;

We discovered Kyoto's rich cultural history on this journey by visiting some notable temples.  We walked under the red tori tunnel gates to the top of Mr. Inari.  There's a "Fox" statue holding a key in its mouth, at the main gate of the Fushimi Inari shrine.

There's a sign showing "How to Purify Yourself". Take the wodden dipper in your right hand and scoop up some water. Wash your left hand. Change the dipper to your left hand, and wash your right hand. Change the dipper into your right hand again, and rinse your mouth with your left hand. Wash the handle of the dipper. Put the dipper back. It shows this in the download.

As we visited the Kyomizu-Dera buddhist temple, I took a beautiful photo of the buddha statue in Kyoto.  Be sure to look for it!
