Travel to - Killarney, Ireland III #019

Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa

The Killarney Plaza, a luxurious 4 star hotel in Killarney Town Centre was another great hotel where we stayed. They offered a great breakfast buffet to start our day, dinner when we came back from our daily tour and much more.

Killarney

Next to a golf course and in the city center, Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa was in a walkable area with great shopping. Ross Golf Club and Killarney Riding Stables were worth checking out if an activity was on our agenda, while those looking for area attractions can visit Killarney House Gardens and Knockreer Estate. Discover the area's water adventures with kayaking and water skiing nearby, or enjoy the great outdoors with hiking/biking trails and ecotours. We  appreciated the hotel's central location and the bus could pick us up right in front.

Horse-drawn Jaunting Car ride

Killarney National Park

We enjoyed the sights of Killarney National Park from the traditional Jaunting Car which operates all year-round, the Killarney Jaunting car trip was a "must" for every one visiting Killarney.

The driver was a wealth of information telling us about the history, folklore and the beauty of Killarney National Park from the comfort of the traditional mode of transport; the Irish jaunting car ...

There was so much beautiful scenery of the Killarney National Park as we enjoyed our horse drawn jaunting car ride through the grounds of the park as we made our way to the majestic 15th century Ross Castle on the shores of Lough Leane.

Views of  (Lake) Lough Leane / Ross Castle

Ross Castle is a 15th-century tower house and keep on the edge of Lough Leane, in Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland. It is the ancestral home of the O'Donoghue clan, later associated with the Brownes of Killarney.

Ross Castle sits on the edge of Killarney’s lower lake and was built by O’Donoghue Mór in the 15th century. The Castle came into the hands of the Brownes who became the Earls of Kenmare and owned an extensive portion of the lands that are now part of Killarney National Park.

Legend has it that O’Donoghue still exists in a deep slumber under the waters of Lough Leane. On the first morning of May every seven years he rises from the lake on his magnificent white horse and circles the lake. Anyone catching a glimpse of him is said to be assured of good fortune for the rest of their lives.

The large rock at the entrance to the bay is known as O’Donoghue’s prison. Ross Castle was the last stronghold in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. It was eventually taken by General Ludlow in 1652.

Lough Leane...

Lough Leane is the largest of the three lakes of Killarney. The River Laune flows from the lake into the Dingle Bay to the northwest.  Lough Leane (from Irish Loch Léin, meaning 'lake of learning') is the largest of the three lakes of Killarney. The River Laune flows from the lake into the Dingle.

Drive to town of Kenmare

The Jewel in the Ring of Kerry...

Kenmare is a small town in the south of County Kerry, Ireland. The name Kenmare is the anglicised form of Ceann Mara, meaning "head of the sea", referring to the head of Kenmare Bay.

Kenmare in Ireland is a haven of tranquillity, gourmet food, superb accommodation, Golf Courses, Riding & Trekking and breathtaking scenery in one of the most natural, unspoiled environments in Europe.

A market town and fishing port...

Vacation in one of the few planned towns in Ireland, Kenmare - was laid out on an X-shaped street plan in the late 18th century by the marquis of Lansdowne as the showpiece of his Kerry estates. It earned its living as a market town and fishing port, and from iron works, lead mining and quarrying.

The Market House and the Lansdowne ...

The “little nest” of Kenmare is part of the famed Ring of Kerry, ideally located on the Wild Atlantic way, Ring of Beara and Ring of Kerry.

Travel along the Ring of Kerry...

Is a scenic drive

One of Ireland's most popular destinations is the Iveragh Peninsula — known to shamrock-lovers everywhere as "The Ring of Kerry."

Ready for the Ring? Touring the Ring takes a long but satisfying day by our private coach from Kenmare. So smart travelers get an early start (by 8:30), working their way clockwise since the tour-bus procession is heading counterclockwise.

The Ring of Kerry is a scenic drive around the Iveragh Peninsula in southwest Ireland’s County Kerry. Its 179km-long, circular route takes in rugged and verdant coastal landscapes and rural seaside villages.

Moll's Gap

Kissane Sheep Farm

Between Muckross House and Kenmare is a scenic mountainous chunk of Killarney National Park (great views at Moll's Gap) and the Kissane Sheep Farm, a real working farm that offers demonstrations of hands-on sheep shearing and expert sheepherding.

Great views of Moll's Gap and a visit to Kissane Sheep Farm, Moll's Gap, County Kerry Ireland  -  sheep Farm & Dog's is a traditional, working sheep farm with approximately 1000 mountain sheep and hundreds of lamb.

Situated between Kenmare and Killarney National Park in Co. Kerry in the Republic of Ireland is Kissane Sheep Farm. The famous panorama of Moll's Gap is in the middle of the land, overlooking the farmand its sheep and lambs.

Our group was invited into their barn where they kept a few of the sheep and the young ones.  They let us hold the babies and what a thrill - they were so cute!  It's something we all will remember!

It was totally amazing watching the herding dogs, mostly Border Collies, round up the sheep.

Virtual Vacations

Dublin, Ireland I - #020

County Cork

Drive through County Cork covers much of Ireland’s southwest. Its capital, Cork, is known for St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral, a neo-Gothic structure with tall spires and stained-glass windows. Across the River Lee is the castle-like Cork City Gaol, built in the 19th century.

Northwest of Cork is the 15th-century Blarney Castle, home to the Blarney Stone, which is said to give the “gift of the gab”, or eloquence, to those who kiss it.

Climb to the top of the Blarney Castle is a must!

The Blarney Castle is a medieval stronghold in Blarney, near Cork, Ireland, and the River Martin.  We climbed all the way to the top of the big castle to have the experience of kissing the Blarney Stone and looking over the Gardens from the top!  It took about an hour because of the crowd wanting to have the same experience.  After you finally get there at the top and it's your turn - you're instructed to lay down on your back and the man holds on to you and helps you while you put your head back, he scoots your head way back to kiss the blarney stone - which is a flat greenish part of the wall.  It's a pretty intense position - if he'd let go, you'd end up falling through the gap down about three levels!!! GOODBYE!!!

There's a pretty big gap there and you're practically standing on your head laying on your back while this guy holds on to you! I have pictures of my experience on the 30-minute download! It's pretty fast and before you know it, you're on your way down the spiraling stairway.  It's something you only want to do once in your life but you'll never forget this experience!!!

Kiss The Blarney Stone;

For over 200 years, world statesmen, literary giants, and legends of the silver screen have joined the millions of pilgrims climbing the steps to kiss the Blarney Stone and gain the gift of eloquence. Its powers are unquestioned but its story still creates debate.

Blarney Woolen Mills Shop for Irish Gifts...

We visited the Blarney Woolen Mills Shop for Irish Gifts, Wool & Aran sweaters, Irish Crystal and Celtic Jewelry - and much more, direct from Ireland at Blarney Woolen Mills.

Below are just a couple of photos but we took a bunch of climbing to the top just to say "we kissed the BLARNEY STONE"!!!  It took about an hour to reach the top because of the amount of other people from "everywhere" wanting to do the same thing!

You can find all these pictures on our 30-minute download and it's worth it to get your own copy - especially if you know you can't travel there right now!

The Rock of Cashel

A13th-century Gothic cathedral...

Took photos at the stately Rock of Cashel -  The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland's most spectacular historic sites: a prominent green hill, banded with limestone outcrops, rising from a grassy plain and bristling with ancient fortifications. Sturdy walls circle an enclosure containing a complete round tower, a 13th-century Gothic cathedral and the finest 12th-century Romanesque chapel in Ireland, home to some of the land's oldest frescoes.

STUNNING HISTORIC FORTRESS

Just off the motorway, driving between Dublin and Killarney or Cork, is the small town of Cashel. It's great attraction is the Rock of Cashel, a nearly 2000-year old castle atop a huge stone outcropping - served as a seat of Irish royalty since the 4th Century and is associated…

Drive North to Dublin;

Dublin is the capital and largest city of Ireland and is in the province of Leinster on the east coast of Ireland, at the mouth of the River Liffey and bordered on the South by the Wicklow Mountains.

Abbey Tavern

Dinner - Irish songs and dancing

Although the Abbey Theatre looks quite contemporary, even swanky with its glass front and the theater name bathed in blue light, the performance venue has turn-of-the-century origins. They opened the national theater in 1904 and It's since been rebuilt and now features 628 seats and a continuous playbill of Ireland's most promising playwrights.

Visitors rave about the venue as the premier place to see quality theater in Dublin, adding that the performances never disappoint.

We had such a great evening with all the wonderful food and drinks but best of all was the super entertainment! These dancers were the best with all their energy plus a broom dance! Caught it on video and you can get your copy on our 30-minute download! #020

Ireland - Dublin II - #021

Dublin's famous party hub

We enjoyed lunch in the Temple Area

This neighborhood is Dublin's famous party hub. During the day, this district thrives on artistic vision, featuring numerous independent galleries and performance art venues. At night, dozens of restaurants open their doors to those looking to share a pint of Guinness and click their heels to spirited Irish music - it was a lot of fun!

Many visitors say that the district has become more of a tourist trap than an authentic representation of Dublin's pub culture, but while in Dublin it is a sight one must see. So pull up a chair, order a pint and enjoy the music.

Our group was there for lunch and it was really crowded - lots of music and everyone having a great time!

Molly Malone statue...

‘Cockles and Mussels’

Walk through town &  the beautiful park;

As we walked through town we came upon - on the corner of Grafton Street and Suffolk Street is the Molly Malone statue. Erected in 1988 Molly Malone has become one of the most famous statues in the city because of its central location and was commissioned in tribute to a traditional Irish song entitled ‘Cockles and Mussels’.

Rumur has it she was a prostitute hence the nickname ‘Tart with a Cart’. Next time you are out on a night out in Dublin just mention Molly Malone and you will probably hear a great, drunken rendition of the song.

We drove through County Cork to visit the 15th-century Blarney Castle, "home to the Blarney Stone" - where we all kissed the Blarney Stone, took photos at the stately Rock of Cashel, visited a 13th-century Gothic cathedral, enjoyed dinner with Irish songs and dancing at the Abbey Theatre (that was quite a show).  All of the first day in Dublin with lots of picture and a video of the wonderful Irish dancers at the Abbey Tavern.  All on Dublin, Ireland I - above.

Dinner - Irish songs and dancing at the Abbey Tavern  video.

On the next day it rained in the morning and we made the best of the unique open "hop on & off bus tour" of the City with time to enjoy seeing the Guinness Storehouse/plant. Had a great lunch in the Temple Area where they played spirited Irish music during our lunch - it was so much fun with all the big green hats and straw hats.

After lunch we walked through town and came upon the Molly Malone statue with a tribute to a traditional Irish song entitled ‘Cockles and Mussels’, then walked back to the hotel through  Phoenix Park where you could see all the lovely flowers, swans, ducks, and seagulls.  What a wonderful and memorable visit - have pictures of the small deer!!!
