Hilo & Kona, Hawaii #065

Called the Big Island...

As we cruised on THE PRIDE OF AMERICA, our next stop was Hilo which is a town on Hawaii, commonly called the Big Island, in the state of Hawaii. It’s known for Wailuku River State Park, featuring Waianuenue, or Rainbow Falls, with its colorful mist effects.

The bubbling basalt-lava rock pools known as the Boiling Pots are nearby. To the south is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to rainforests and the active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.

Hilo is the capital of the Big Island and lies on the windward (East) side of the Island. This is the rainy side on all Hawaiian islands and rainfall here averages 140 inches annually.

This makes the Hilo district tropical and lush and fills the surrounding (rain) forests with colorful flowers and waterfalls.

Also is home of the University of Hawaii Hilo campus - whose students and staff form about 10% of all of Hilo’s inhabitants. This gives parts of Hilo the vibe of a college town, with its own special atmosphere.

Volcano Village and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are a 40 minute drive to the south-west away from Hilo.  Our experience was spectacular volcanos, craters and steam vents at the park that was opened after a period of tumultuous volcanic activity.

The landscape of the Volcanoes Park has dramatically changed as the floor of the Kilauea crater has sunk over 1,500 feet and the overall caldera quadrupled in size, widening by over a square mile making remarkable changes in the summit area.

As you can observe by the photos below, you can get this wonderful 30-minute download of this tour for your very own of all the beauty you see on this page!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park...

SteamVents and Kilauea IKI Lookout...

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is on Hawaii Island (the Big Island). At its heart are the Kīlauea and Mauna Loa active volcanoes. The Crater Rim Drive passes steam vents and the Jaggar Museum, which features volcanology exhibits and a viewpoint overlooking Halema'uma'u Crater.

Thick ferns mark the entrance to the Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku). The Chain of Craters Road weaves over lava trails which crisscross the park.

Kīlauea is an active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands that last erupted between 1983 and 2018. Historically, Kīlauea is the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaii.

There's many steam vents you can see all around with an easy walk to the Steaming Bluff Overlook.  You can see more on our 30-minute download.

Our visit to the Kilauea Visitor Center was a great experience with all the wonderful unique souvenirs of t-shirts, sweatshirts, and so many photos on the walls showing the volcanos as they were going off!  You can only experience all of this action when you have a 30-minute download of this great tour!

St Benedict Catholic Church...

Painted by Father Evarist Gielen!

Saint Benedict's Catholic Church is a parish of the Roman Catholic Church in Honaunau, Hawaii.  This special church is known as the "Painted Church".  Decorated by a Priest from Belgium in 1900 and it's a favorite attraction!  Folk art covers the interior walls!  You'l have to see this on the download - beautiful!

It was built between 1899-1902 under the direction of the Belgian Catholic missionary Father John Velghe, who then painted frescoes along the interior ceiling and walls.

There was so much to see and 'lots and lots of photos' you can observe on our 30-minute download.  Not enough space on this page for everything!!!

Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau Nat'l Historical Park...

A place of refuge and royal grounds south of Kealakekua Bay...

This 182-acre park contains the Puuhonua, a sacred place of refuge, as well as other temples and coastal sites.  The Royal Grounds, which were the sacred home of alii. See Keoneele Cove, the royal canoe landing; the Keoua Stone, the favorite resting place of the high chief of Kona, Keoua; as well as halau (thatched work house), fishponds and a heiau (sacred temple) that is one of the oldest structures in the park. Many interesting statues throughout the grounds.

Archaeological park featuring burial grounds offers self-guided tours of reconstructed villages. Beautiful at sunset, this sacred place gives visitors an important glimpse into early Hawaiian culture.

We visited the national park and spent several hours enjoying some amazing Hawaiian history. Very much worth the stop!

Many photos of this incredible historical site, including the wooden statue images of the fierce-looking gods, the temple that held the bones of the deceased chiefs all on your own download!

Body Glove Cruises...

Fantastic Historic Dinner Cruise!

Our next outing was aboard a powered catamaran for a cruise through Kona's history, when Hawaiian kings ruled these tropical isles.  Our guide provided the narration as we passed by the noteworthy sites including temples, battlefields and an unusual recreation site - the hole or slide.  Was called "sledding" - down grass-covered slopes and stone ramps.

We had a fabulous time on the Historic Dinner Cruise while on our stay in Kona. The staff was great, the storyteller was very engaging and the musician was awesome.

The food was really tasty and a tour of the water-front property gave me some awesome photos included on the 30-minute download... $12

Kauai, Hawaii #066

Nawiliwili, Kauai, Hawaii...

This was our first day of an over-night visit to this part of the country and there was a beautiful view of the port and all the surrounding beauty of the high green hills with a nice light house in the distance and also many boats.

Opaeka'a Falls Waterfall in Hawaii  - ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls is a waterfall located on the ʻŌpaekaʻa Stream in Wailua River State Park on the eastern side of the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

It is a 151–foot waterfall that flows over basalt from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago - Kauai’s largest navigable river.
Where: About 15 minutes north of Lihue, on Kauai’s East Side

The tranquil Wailua River weaves by gorgeous waterfalls and lush, jungle landscapes along the island’s East Side. Kauai has the only navigable rivers in Hawaii and with the Wailua River being the largest.

The 20-mile long river that once wove through the settings of seven different heiau (temples), flows from the 5,148-foot Mount Waialeale in the center of the island. The Wailua River feeds two popular and accessible waterfalls: Opaekaa Falls and Wailua Falls. The scenic river itself can be explored by kayak, SUP or outrigger canoe, and a boat tour is also available.

Open-air boats also offer guided tours of the Fern Grotto, a natural lava rock cave sheltered by draping ferns. This romantic area is a popular wedding venue.

Also look for the Nounou Mountains (Sleeping Giant), a formation on a mountain ridge between Wailua and Kapaa that looks like a human figure lying on its back.

Waterfalls, Hawaii

Fern Grotto...

Take a RiverBoat Upstream to Fern Grotto...

Fern Grotto is an environmental wonderment on the east side of Kauaʻi that draws big crowds every year. The naturally-formed lava cave is dripping in ferns and enveloped by lush plant life creating a gorgeous vista though the Wailua River State Park vegetation.

One of Kauai's most popular natural attractions is Fern Grotto, a fern-fringed lava cave. Its a must see for all visitors going to Kauai!

We visited the Fern Grotto with Smith's Fern Grotto Tours.  It's a gentle boat ride down the river to the grotto. On the way you are given information on the geography & history.

We had not returned to the Fern Grotto for 5 years and it's still as beautiful as it always WAS!!!

The only way to gain access to this popular location is by boat via the Wailua River. We went upriver on the Smith boat - a family business that has been on the Wailua River for years and they happily discount seniors and special needs.

It's a short walk from the pier to the grotto. And, yes, the grotto is still enchanting with its little waterfall, misty ambiance and a little music and dance from the Smiths - with a gracious host telling the stories of the Grotto and the music and dancing was great!

Our host that day offered the added bonus of Hawaiian entertainment along with his  storytelling. He told us of all the many weddings held there and all the history of this beautiful place!

The only walking required on this tour is about 5-minutes long when you take an easy path that leads you to an up-close-and-personal view of the grotto.

Once you’re here, you’ll understand why this is praised as such a romantic setting and continues to be a popular spot for weddings.

Musicians strumming their ukuleles will serenade you while you soak in the view and the hula dancers will sway their hips and tell you a story with their hands — it's the icing on this Hawaiian tourist’s cake.
